Joe Bo blew the save last night in Colorodo by giving up 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth. Since he has been out for a bit this season I went to refresh my memory on his stats and was not suprised at what I found.
Saves: 5 Blown Saves: 3 ERA: 8.31

We need to groom a closer... I thought Jensen for awhile but his arm this year has looked "human"... I always liked Ed Mujica he has the stuff but just can't seem to put it together he can either be dominate or absolutely terrible... Raffy Left has the stuff but really isn't being given a chance... he seems to know just be a left handed specialist..... Adam Miller next year to protect his arm... who knows....Jeff Steven he has been pretty dominate as a reliever but he doesn't have a good closer name like Jonathan Paplebon or Mariano Riveria where it just sounds good.
Do we pursue K-Rod in free agency this winter?

I changed the name of my username b/c I'm afraid it was jinxing the real Jeremy Sowers so I'm trying this out for a while and see if his luck can improve.

Yeah the only reason Joe Bo is the tribes closer right now is no one else can do it or has experience. Raffy P might be good but he has a hard time getting people out sometimes when he has no pressure at all. The truth is no one else will be a closer unless the tribe will trade for one, or when the season gets way out of hand and no playoff chance Eric might try someone there.

I think we need to trade for a closer or try to get K-Rod. Grooming a closer will not help us this next year. Although I am starting to wonder if we shouldn't try to make Adam Miller a closer so he doesn't get injured every year and we can actually get something from him.

Why not Masa? He did it for years in Japan and has saved our butts quite a bit lately. Why not?

It is soooo different with Japan and American Baseball. When Masa was put in the closer role he blew it HARD. Before he was a closer he had a 1.80 ERA and now it is like a 3.00 something ERA. It seemed like the closer role messesd him up. Masa came to America in hopes to be a closer, but I think he will have to play a couple years in the MLB until he gets that role.

Are you serious Haftime? Ok, to try and address all your points...
I only really would count Masa blowing 1 save opp this year that can really be blamed on him.
Besides, pitching in Japan you must deal with way more pressure. Did you not watch that Bobby Valentine show that was on a few weeks ago, those fans are C R A Z Y.
Joe Bo has been a closer for ONLY 2 seasons before this. Masa has for 7 and a half seasons.
Joe Bo has given up 12 runs in 13 innings where Masa has given up 13 runs in 38.2 innings.
Right now Joe Bo averages 2 baserunners per inning - Masa is barely over 1.
If Masa has a 3.03 ERA and this is his first year in America imagine how dominating he will be when he gets used to being here and which batters do what.

The past couple games, Masa has ostensibly been our closer and done just fine and didn't think he was too horrible in any his other closing appearances either. Could he be one of MLB's top closers, probably not. But look at your options. JoeBo sucks, Betancourt completely melted down when thrown into the role, and you might risk the same with Perez. Unless you bring someone else in, who do we have that can even come close? Is the level of competition greater here than in Japan? Sure, but is the pressure of the closer role any different there than it is here? I wouldn't think so.
As for bringing someone else in, who? Teams aren't so willing to give up their closer.

Are you serious Haftime? Ok, to try and address all your points... I only really would count Masa blowing 1 save opp this year that can really be blamed on him. Well for one thing he has two blown saves and one game we didn't even have any errors so that one wasn't on him along with the other which he let up a homerBesides, pitching in Japan you must deal with way more pressure. Did you not watch that Bobby Valentine show that was on a few weeks ago, those fans are C R A Z Y. I don't care how crazy the Japanese fans are, it isn't as big of a factor as the talent he is going against. We only see their best prospects and only a few have came to the U.S. and blew our doors off. The talent is mostly AAA level compared to the MLB.Joe Bo has been a closer for ONLY 2 seasons before this. Masa has for 7 and a half seasons. He has actually been a closer for 3 season where he had over 30 saves and averaging 6 BS per season. Where as Rivera averages 3.7 a season over his past 10 years. The guy gives me a coronary in almost every game he has been in but right now he is our only proven option.Joe Bo has given up 12 runs in 13 innings where Masa has given up 13 runs in 38.2 innings. He might have only given up 13 runs in 38.2 innings but how many of those innings are in save situations? Most of Masa's body of work this year has been garbage time (start of the season) and middle relief. I want to see Masa in a few consecutive save situations before I am convinced he should be our closer. Right now Joe Bo averages 2 baserunners per inning - Masa is barely over 1. Same as above, not all in save situations. In save opportunities Masa (6 appearances) averages 1.83 baserunners/outing while Borowski averages 1.125 baserunners/outing which is comparing apples to apples. If Masa has a 3.03 ERA and this is his first year in America imagine how dominating he will be when he gets used to being here and which batters do what. Don't get me wrong I like what I have seen out of Masa so far but I don't think throwing him to the wolves right now will be the best idea. If he keeps this up throughout the year I would like him to take the job from JoeBlow next year.

Oh yeah, I forgot he closed in '03 with the cubbies for a bit. But as for next year... I really dont think we can wait, thats the problem. We cant just fiddle around and figure out whats best for the future when we have the talent this year to go all the way.

I know that Joe Bo is not the future b/c the guy is 37. he will be here until the end of the year. There is no one out there that will trade a good closer for anything less then an arm and an leg. I don't know what kind of prospect Shapiro would have to trade to get a good closer, and I don't think he would part with one. Randy Newsom is our future. he has been sitting in AA with a 4-1, 3.12 era , 18sv's in 49 innings at age 25. Randy is the future sure he won't be pitching this year in the majors but I would hope by the end of the year he will be in at least AAA. This guy has a great fastball and slider and I would think in a few years he will become a good closer

Masa probably would make a great dominate closer for only a year or two howevever
We have seen old closers from Japan and com over dominate then fall off the face of the earth
Remember Kazuhiro Sasaki of the Seattle Mariners? 3 great years was looking like he could be one of the best closers in baseball then falls off the face of the earth
How about division rival Whitesox Shingo Takastu had only ONE good year and had a bright future then falls off the face of the earth
I expect Takashi Saito of LA Dodgers to fall victim to the same pattern
Randy Newsome might make a good closer but his 20-18 K:BB ratio is not good especially in 32 innings of work and is a 26 year old in AA so he's never even faced a AAA hitter before

I think Saito will be a beast for what little time he has left in his baseball years (hes 38 now).
